It's a Family Game: 4 Ways to Get Your Child Excited About Golf

One of the great things about golf is that it's a sport that the whole family can get involved with. If you enjoy golf, but you haven't introduced your kids to it yet, now's the time to do it. Here are four simple strategies that will help you get your kids excited about golf.

Start with the Driving Range

The last thing you want to do is introduce your kids to golf with a full 18 holes. The best way to ensure an enjoyable time is to start slow. Reserve a spot on the driving range and head out with your kids. Take the golf clubs, grab a bucket of balls, and let your kids practice their swing. Add to the enjoyment by allowing your kids to bring a friend along for the day. Don't worry if they don't have a perfect swing right away. Once they realize how much fun it is, you'll be able to practice with them on a regular basis.

Get Them Their Own Gear

As soon as your kids show an interest in the sport, suit them up with their own gear. This should include clubs that are suited to their size and abilities. You don't want them playing with clubs that are not the right size or weight for them. It's also important that you provide them with the proper golf attire. Having the shirt, pants and shoes will help your kids feel better about themselves and their game.

Keep it Fun

When you first start playing golf with your kids, be sure you keep it fun. Go ahead and keep the game competitive with your friends - and golf buddies - but avoid competition when playing with your kids. This is particularly important when they're just starting out in the game. Pressure to compete can make kids lose interest in a sport, even one that they enjoy. Until your kids get a grip on the game, try to keep the games at a par 3 level. As they progress in their abilities, introduce them to the lower par courses.

Take in a Pro Tournament

Once your kids start showing an active interest in the sport, introduce them to the Pros. Find a PGA tour near you and share the thrill of being up close and personal with the pro players. If you can't find a pro tour near you, contact the local golf club and take in a few semi-pro tournaments.
